Home Away from Home
The part of campus east of State largely consists of student residences. Back during mid-century, before the opening (in 2003) of the present student center (McCormick Tribune Campus Center), the “el’ tracks effectively divided the campus between academic and residential spaces—and most campus parking lots were situated under the “el” tracks (many still are). But the area east of State is quieter than the area to its west (with its student foot traffic and busy Dan Ryan Expressway). Though quiet study space could be found east of State in the university library, one was more sure to find it in one’s own dorm room, in the fraternities and sororities, and in the Commons, where one had the best indoor view of the rising sun.
